On Friday afternoon I went to the Kelvin Grove campus and got a tour of the campus and library there. The campus is home to the QUT International College and
to students in Creative industries, Education and Health. The campus is also part of the Kelvin Grove Village which boasts shops, restaurants, a weekly market, residential units,
parklands and fitness facilities, alongside the dynamic art and
performance spaces at QUT's Creative Industries Precinct. The precinct gives designers,
artists, researchers, educators and entrepreneurs unique opportunities
to collaborate with others to create new work and develop the creative
industries sector in Queensland. Also exhibitions, live performances, screenings, festivals and seminars are presented there.
Of course the campus also has a library and collaborative learning spaces. The Kelvin Grove Library provides resources and services for students studying creative industries, education and health. It was refurbished some years ago and has won an award for that. The refurbishment delivered an increased capacity of over 200 seats, ranging from group focused
training rooms to personal retreat spaces on the quieter upper floors, a
roof top terrace, media rooms and a computer gaming lab where
developmental and ‘retro’ games can be accessed for both research and
pleasure.
Now the library has group study spaces and silent study spaces, printing and copying services, computer labs and wireless internet, a helpdesk for assistance with assignments, an adaptive technology laboratory where students with a disability can use specialised equipment, and a Researchers' Centre that provides study spaces for research students and staff.
This is the view from the rooftop:
Thanks to the library staff at Kelvin Grove for giving me a warm welcome and for telling me about their services. I will write about the liaison team(s) and research support services in another blogpost.
