Research Support Services offered by University of Sydney Library

On the library's webpage under research support, they have organised  key resources and services to support researchers throughout the research lifecycle.
That means there are links and other information under each of five stages of research: design & discover, plan & fund, research & experiment, disseminate & publish, and curate & preserve.
Have a closer look here: https://library.sydney.edu.au/research/research-support.html

The Academic Liaison Librarians work with researchers and teachers to achieve research, learning and teaching goals.
Regarding research support, the liaison librarians among others offer individual research consultations to academics, researchers and students. They also provide:
  • advice on measuring, evaluating and maximising the impact of research
  • support, advice and hands-on training to help manage citations
  • advice on research data management strategies and open access publishing
For research data management (RDM), the library has established a research data team last year that comprises a research data manager, a research data officer, a digital curation officer and a data analysis (and visualisation) officer.
When I talked to them I was impressed by their knowledge and enthusiasm. The research data team works closely together with the research office of the university, with the faculty research managers and with the ethics committee. I was also told that the university has appointed a so-called research data stewart - a person on high level within the university - who's purpose is to convince both researchers and university management to focus on research data management.
In addition, the university will change its institutional repository and get one that can also be used as a data repository and not only as a repository for publications.

The research data team has developed RDM guidelines in order to train researchers and not do all the work for them. See here: https://library.sydney.edu.au/research/data-management/

The team conducts webinars, face to face lectures and one to one consultations. It has also given training to the liaison librarians and both groups are working on an understanding of their roles, that means who is in charge of what and who will conduct the different tasks.

It's also very interesting that the library has established a Digital Scholarship Studio, a space to collaborate, work, learn and explore.
The webpage states: "The Studio consolidates cutting edge technologies and includes access to digital collections, digital repositories, digital data analysis and visualisation and digitisation services and brings them together into one area for researchers and higher degree research students to use and explore. Combining technological expertise with open access advocacy, the Studio aims to facilitate trusted partnerships and foster connections and community amongst digital scholars."

At the moment the studio provides services in:
  • Data rescue
  • Digitisation
  • Research data management
  • Data visualisation and analysis
  • Access to 3D printing for research
